Ksenia Danilova

Artist member since 2023

Ksenia Danilova is a mixed-media artist living and working in Toronto. She’s currently studying at OCAD University, Majoring in Drawing and Painting with a minor in Expanded Animation. She works primarily with watercolour and gouache on wood and found materials. She also makes works with digital art.

Ksenia Danilova’s work is an explorative response to environmental concerns and the impending climate crisis. The works were inspired by research done about current issues and potential future impacts. In her monochromatic cityscape paintings of familiar locations around Toronto, she envisions a post-apocalyptic world where plants have reclaimed the city. Each work in her series After the Event features a haunting figure observing from the background, representing the personification of nature as she rediscovers a world without humans. She uses gouache and watercolour on wood to create an ethereal, hazy green atmosphere, reflecting the calm and serenity of nature but also echoing the toxicity caused by human overconsumption. The use of wood creates a stronger relationship between the subject matter and the surface.

Q+A

Best season of the year in Toronto

Late Spring, I love seeing the plants come back after winter is over, and the city starts to feel like it's coming back to life a little bit.

Beverage of choice

Peppermint or Vanilla Earl Grey tea with 2 sugars

Favourite medium

Gouache 100%, I love how versatile it is, and the matte effect of the paint.

Why is art important to you?

I've been making art for as long as I can remember, whether in my sketchbook or on massive canvases. It's a way for me to express my enjoyment of something, to process emotions and difficult subjects, to combat boredom. It's always been a part of me, and a lot of my works feel like an extension of myself.

How long have you been creating art?

I've loved drawing since I was a kid, but I really started taking it seriously around middle school. I burned through about 4-6 sketchbooks every year up until grade 12 when I got into the AP art program at my high school.
